What is the difference between a Backwater Valve and a Backflow Preventer?
A Backwater Valve is a sewer device installed on your main drain to prevent water (from a city sewer backup) from entering your home. A Backflow Preventer is a separate device installed on your fresh water supply line to prevent contaminated (non-potable) water from reversing flow and entering the public water system.
Is a backwater valve mandatory for my existing home, and how much is the city rebate?
It is not mandatory for existing homes unless you are doing major plumbing work. However, installation is highly recommended due to flood risk. The City of Ottawa offers a Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program, which currently offers up to $1,000 for a backwater valve installation.
Does my residential backwater valve require annual testing or maintenance?
Backwater valves (sewer protection) do not require mandatory annual testing, but they should be inspected and cleaned annually to ensure the internal flap is free of debris and functioning correctly. Backflow preventers (water supply protection) do require mandatory annual testing and certification by a licensed tester.
